WEEK 1: Observations

Image 1: Make Your Mark
This image shows my stroke experimentation with different dry and wet mediums. The mediums I used for each row from top to bottom are: pencil, 0.4mm fine liner, chalk pastel, brush-tip marker, liquid ink and watercolour. My favourite to use were the pencil, fine liner and brush-tip marker as it gave me a lot more control when making thin, small strokes. The chalk pastel, watercolour and ink however, were much more harder to control, and would be better suited to larger/gestural strokes.
Image 2: Line Drawings
This image displays my line drawings of six different objects. The objects I chose were: a fine liner, a hand sanitiser bottle, a pencil sharpener, a book, sunglasses and a sunscreen tube. We were encouraged to limit the details and only draw the most basic features and outlines of each object with a texter.
Image 3: Drawing Shapes
For this exercise, we had to reference the same objects in Image 2 and use liquid ink to paint the shapes. These paintings were more detailed as it involved depicting the shadows and highlights of the objects as they were seen in the real world.
Image 4: Combine Shapes & Lines
This image is a continuation of Image 3, where I took the painted objects and outlined the most basic features in fine liner, which added contrast and a clearer form. I wanted the lines to be a bit messy and unconnected to match the style of the ink.
Image 5: Drawing Negative Space
This is an exercise I competed at home after our Week 1 class. The reference I chose for this was an existing picture I'd taken of my white cat, Alex. Instead of starting with the subject of the picture, I had to study the shape of her and paint the space around her first. This was harder than I thought because I didn't have the option of sketching it out first, and could only work with the outline I made with the watercolour. After this I tried my best to draw the details of her face, ears, paws and shadows using a fine line pen.
